I managed to find time to write a small but in my opinion, useful tutorial about sharpening a photograph in photoshop. It’s the method I usually use unless theres some special reason that I can’t. Gizmodo recently posted a story about a lost camera. I find it showing a total lack of morality and the perfect example of greed. After you read it I’m sure you will agree with me. A more detailed entry found on the actual persons blog which can be found here. Read the gizmodo post first though, it gives some background of the incident in a summarized format.

I liked this shot, it was a great print. This was not toned in photoshop, this is almost a straight scan from the print minus some dust spots. I sepia toned it in the lab. The scan color isnt perfect, but its relatively close. It was originally a very dark shot but sepia toning tends to lighten a image a bit and this was the result i got. Just in case you dont know what it is, it’s a bicycle chain wrapped around the top frame of a bicycle. Don’t forget to zoom in to see more detail when you click the photo.

I really wanted to work on a photoshop tutorial today but unfortunately wordpress is going through some coding problems and my page editing isn’t working. So I guess I’ll have to wait until they get through all the problems. It will give me some time to think about what the topic of the tutorial will be. If anyone wants a specific tutorial or a “how did you do that” feel free to leave a comment on any post i make. I will attempt to answer your question or request if im able to. So I’ll just leave you all another silly excerpt from Overheard.

I do rather enjoy a nice black and white photo. Sometimes you don’t really need color to tell a story to the viewer. For example, this image, (one of mine of course) leaves you wondering whats around the corner. A color photo would really have no effect here, considering this stairwell has no color in the first place. Everything varies a shade of gray. On the day I took this photo, I wasn’t really trying my hardest to find great things to photograph. I was actually just trying to take as many photos as I could in order for me to finish the roll and be able to develop it later at the lab that day. I didn’t really know how this shot was going to turn out, since there is so many potential problems that could of occurred. The stairwell is considerably dark most of the time, and getting any detail to show up in the shadow areas was going to be tricky, and the very bright window could of easily tricked the lightmeter and force it to underexpose. I do have to give my camera credit because its light meter has yet to fail me. So thank you Canon for producing the Elan 7e. The scan is pretty close to what the print looks like, but i have yet to find the optimal scan settings on my scanner. It tends to scan images with very flat tones and I end up having to correct the levels in photoshop constantly, which sometimes produces a scan that looks like i may have overexposed the highlights a bit. I stumbled upon this article at yahoo news a few days ago, and I just had to share it. But first I’ll give you a synopsis of what its about. Basically the current mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, stopped by the city’s legislative office in Albany, NY and was making his rounds around the office shaking hands, posing for pictures taken by his photographer, and “meet the workers” type stuff. When he got to Office assistant Edward Greenwood IX who was going over some papers while Bloomberg was making his way through the office, Greenwood stood, shook Bloomberg’s hand and the photographer snapped a photo. What Greenwood didn’t know was that Bloomberg had spotted a game of solitaire running on Greenwood’s computer. Bloomberg said nothing about it to Greenwood but later on Bloomberg told an aide to fire Greenwood because of the game. Bloomberg defended his no tolerance decision.
“The workplace is not an appropriate place for games,” Bloomberg said. “It’s a place where you’ve got to do the job that you’re getting paid for.”
This guy Greenwood never had any prior offences, had been working at the office for about six years and has a toddler child at home. He mentioned that he does play solitaire which he limits to one-hour lunch or during quick breaks in order to give his mind a break from the stress of work.

Now I am a business student, who will be obtaining a degree in a few months (hopefully) and I can see that improper use of computers can lead to lower output, but give me a break. If it wasn’t solitaire, time could be wasted in many other ways. This guy could of just stared at the ceiling for 20 minutes, would that be more acceptable to Bloomberg? We all know that there are plenty of people at our jobs who spend way more time than a lunch break or a quick mind refresher break to waste some time. Making your employees fear you is not the greatest way to increase output and it sure beats down employee morale. If Bloomberg really didn’t want anyone playing games at work then he should of made sure that no computer in the office even contained a game. My old job’s computers had every game that comes installed on a Windows PC removed, (not that finding an internet game was all that hard). But if you attempt to make your employees understand that a little break here and there is alright as long as you don’t go overboard, then your employees may actually enjoy their work environment. A happy employee is a productive employee. Bad employee morale can really kill your output. Just think, if you were in a position where you knew a bunch of layoffs were about to happen and your department might be the one that gets hit, would you work at your full potential? Or would you feel like there is no point, that you will get fired no matter how hard you work. I’d probably feel the latter. Well I guess that’s enough ranting and raving from me.

Lots of snow coming down in New York today. Took this shot out my window sometime this morning. It’s been a while since we’ve had a snow storm like this. In fact its been a very weird winter, many days where it was warm enough to go out with a light jacket in the middle of January. (Bush says there is no such thing as global warming…) Figured I’d get a shot of what could be the last snow storm of the winter, who knows, maybe next year the polar ice caps will melt and I’ll be taking photos of the East River out my window. Brooklyn will be the next Venice…
Valentines day is coming up, I don’t like that holiday, it just makes me feel like i’m some kind of loser if I don’t have a girlfriend/wife on that day. It’s just a day for Hallmark to make some money and the flower stores to charge ridiculous amounts of money for a rose. Soon enough it won’t be good enough for a regular flower, soon we’ll have to start shelling out more money for flowers with images printed on them. Can’t wait…
On a side note my friend Paradoxical posted a pretty funny blog that i got a kick out of. Certainly makes your mind wander. Check it out 😛

I wrote a tutorial on some photoshop usage. Explaining the method i use to make some of my images “pop” i guess. Drop by the .photography. page, there is a tutorial section that i just created. There you can find the .photoshop tutorials. page which contains the new tutorial called .color pop.

This was a shot i did a while back for DPChallenge. Basically it was just a simple set up. I put a strawberry down on a table, had sunlight coming in from the left side of the strawberry and a lamp on the other side. Lighting a macro can be quite difficult. This shot was taken with a reversed lens setup, which means, a 105mm macro lens is on the camera body, a reversing ring screwed into the filter, then a 50mm lens is attached reversed onto the front of the macro lens. You end up with much higher magnification and even more difficulty getting something in focus. Forget about focusing, you need to just move the entire camera or the subject closer or farther until its in focus. Of course your camera has to be on a tripod, forget hand holding something that has a depth of field as thick as a peice of paper practically. Set the lens at a good f-stop such as f8 or higher, put mirror lockup on if you have that option, cover the viewfinder so no stray light gets in, and snap the picture (preferably with a remote so you dont cause any vibrations, even the self timer can work). Its not the greatest picture in my opinion but i thought it was interesting to see something that close up that we normally dont take the time to look at. Did you know the strawberry is the only fruit that has its seeds on the outside? Pretty cool =D
