Continuing on my recent pinhole links, here is how to make a medium format camera out of, you guessed it, LEGO’s! Pretty ingenious if you ask me and looks cool as well!

Revisiting the holga effect, photoshop style. Here are some cool little action files you can play around with that holga feel you love so much. I’m also throwing in a Lomography action as well. They are hosted on Adobe’s Studio Exchange, so you will need to have an account with Adobe to be able to download them, no worries, the account is free. Don’t remember how to use actions? Check out the tutorial I wrote on actions, particularly the “Playing the Action” and “Loading a Downloaded Action” parts.

.new files.

5 07 2006

The other day i was messing around with photoshop, and I figured I would make some files for my readers that they may find useful. Two of them are for the cross-processed film look, E6 in C41 chemistry and vice versa. The other file is an actions file where I attempted to record the process of having a split-tone effect.

Downloading
There is a password you need to enter to grab these files. It is “idreaminred” without the quotes.
C41 in E6 Cross Process Curve file
E6 in C41 Cross Process Curve file
Split toning Actions file

Installing
Curve files – Just put these anywhere, just as long as you can find them when you need them. When you open up a new curves dialog in photoshop, there will be a button labeled “load”, just click that, and locate the file.
Action files – Check out the actions tutorial I wrote here. Look towards the bottom and you will see how to install an action file.

Using
Cross process curve files – I suggest loading them in an adjustment layer rather than a regular curves dialog, that way you can adjust the opacity to change the effect to your liking. Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves
Action file – just follow the directions when you run the action.

If you download and enjoy the files, please drop me a comment here, that way I know I’m not just wasting my time.

20 06 2006

I’m sure you have seen those images of towns and cities where everything seems to look like it’s actually a tiny model of a town. The effect can be seen all over flickr, and originates from an effect obtained normally through a tilt-shift lens, used mainly for correcting distortions when doing architectual photography. Well the effect can be recreated through photoshop, and I happened upon a cool little tutorial for it. The link was also mentioned in this months popular photography magazine.

.actions tutorial.

31 05 2006

Here is a quick tutorial on how to use actions in photoshop. Actions allow the user to repeat mundane tasks or very long procedures at the click of the mouse. You can create your own, or use the thousands of actions created by other photoshop users for free.

Creating an action
Step 1 – go to your actions list and click the button on the bottom that looks like a page with its corner being pulled up, seen below.

step1newButton.jpg

Step 2 – A box will pop up asking for the title of your new action, and which action set you wish to place it in. Don’t really need to mess with the rest of the options. For the sake of the tutorial, lets call the action “Auto Corrections”. When you are done naming your action, hit the record button.

Step 3 – Ok, the recording has begun. Do your auto corrections to the photo, Image > Adjustments > Auto Levels, Auto Contrast, Auto Color. After that, we need to stop the recording. Click the square that is below the actions list, seen below.

Playing the Action

Load the image you wish to apply your action to, select your action, then click the play button seen below.

Loading a Downloaded Action

Step 1 – To load an action that you may have downloaded, you need to load it into the action menu to use. Click the small arrow button usually located in the top right of the action box, the button is circled in the image below.

Step 2 – Select “Load Actions…” from the menu seen below, find the action that was downloaded, and your set to use your new action.
